Nassau Cruise Port Joins Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program

Nassau Cruise Port (NCP) has announced its participation in the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program, a global initiative designed to support individuals with non-visible disabilities. This significant step underscores NCP’s commitment to inclusiveness and exceptional customer service.

The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program provides a simple yet effective way for individuals with non-visible disabilities to discreetly indicate their need for additional support or understanding. Participants wear a green lanyard, badge or wristband with a yellow Sunflower, signaling to staff and the public that they may require extra assistance, patience or time. This initiative helps raise awareness and fosters a more inclusive environment for those with conditions that are not immediately apparent such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), ADHD, epilepsy, chronic pain conditions, mental health conditions, hearing impairments and more.

By adopting the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program, Nassau Cruise Port enhances its ability to serve all passengers with dignity and respect. Key benefits include:

  • Enhanced customer experience – The program allows NCP staff to identify and assist passengers with non-visible disabilities more effectively, ensuring they receive the support they need throughout their journey.
  • Increased inclusivity – Joining the program demonstrates NCP’s commitment to creating an inclusive environment where all passengers feel welcome and valued.
  • Improved staff training – Participation in the program includes comprehensive training for NCP staff, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to better assist passengers with hidden disabilities.

Mike Maura, Jr., CEO of NCP, said: “This initiative is a testament to our ongoing efforts to enhance the passenger experience and ensure that everyone who visits Nassau Cruise Port feels supported and valued. Globally, 1.3 billion people have a disability, representing one in six of the population who can face barriers when traveling. We are committed to fostering an inclusive environment and look forward to the positive impact this program will have on our visitors and the local community.”

NCP is the first cruise port in the region to become a member of the global Hidden Disabilities Sunflower network.
